The new garage

The new garage is only a single garage and its not attached to the house, this isn't ideal but its a whole lot better than what I had before.

I've painted the floor with conrete floor paint, for the first coat mix it 50/50 with white spirit and use a broom to apply it. This will help it penetrate down and reduce and chipping that may occur, allowing the conrecte to cure properly and applying a stabiliser will also help this. For the second coat apply it liberally with a large masonry brush, it's pretty hard work but its worth it.

The second job was to put up a board that I can hang my tools on to keep them tidy, a 4'x2' 12mm sheet of chipboard is ideal, I made a frame from 2x1 to go behind it so any hooks/nails I banged in didn't go straight into the brickwork.

Third and final job was the electrics, I was advised that 4 4' flourescents give 125% of the recommended lighting, that may seem a lot but the more light you can get the better. In fact I've got 2 4' tubes and 2 5' ones, the 5' tubes are only a couple of quid more expensive and are almost twice as bright. I've mounted these along each edge of the garage so that any shadows are minimised and there is a fair amount of light over the workbench, engine bay and down the sides of the car which are usually in darkness. On top of this I'll be adding an inspection light in the middle to fill out any shadows that are left and to act as a moveable light source. Having at least one incandesent light source is important as floursecents can act as strobes and make a rapidly moving piece of heavy machinery appear stationary.
